(CommsMEA) - Broadband revenue in Iran is expected to increase by 124% between 2011 and 2016 to reach $1.2 billion, despite international pressure on vendors to curtail their business activities in the country, according to a report from Pyramid Research. This increase will be mainly due to increased government investment for broadband rollouts and rural connectivity, the report stated.Under its “Fifth Development Plan” the Iranian government intends to increase the number of high-speed connections in the country to 36 million by 2015. The government has also created rural ICT centers in the hopes of expanding its fixed sector market share by connecting previously underserved areas.“As a result of the attention and financial investment, the broadband segment of the fixed sector will grow rapidly during the forecast at a CAGR of 18.0 percent to reach a revenue of $1.2 billion by 2016,” said Ronda Zelezny-Green, associate research analyst, Pyramid Research.“Iran may experience some delays in acquiring new technology for its telecommunications sector because the international community is placing pressure on vendors not to do business with Iran” Zoorna: Soaring Iphone sales despite sanctions depicts the fact that Iranians acquire the technology they need anyways; it's up to investors of the shrinking world economy to use the opportunity or face more recession.
