After the death of Artaxerxes 1 in 424 B.C., three of his sons declared themselves king.
One of them was Sogdianus, the son of Artaxerxes and a Babylonian woman named Alogyne. The other called himself Xerxes 2nd, son of Queen Damaspia who died the same day as her husband Artaxerxes. When Ochus, the son of Artaxerxes and Cosmartidene heard the news he felt dishonored because he was higher in rank. Therefore he refused to submit to Sogdianus and got support from the commander of the cavalry, Arbarios, and became king taking the throne name Dariush 2nd. He married his half-sister Parysatis. His coronation took place on Jan, 10, 423 B.C.
In 420 B.C., Satrap of Lydia Pissuthnes revolted against Dariush 2. The king sent a nobleman named Tissaphernes to incite a rebellion among Pissuthnes' Greek mercenaries, a mission which was achieved. Pissuthnes was offered negotiations but when he arrived for the talks, he was arrested, sent to the king and executed in 415. Tissaphernes became Satrap of Lydia. While Pissuthnes' son Amorges continued the rebellion with Greek help, Tissaphernes made a treaty with Spartans that led to Amorges' arrest in 412. In 413 during outbreak of the Ionian War between Athens and Sparta Dariush 2 preferred a policy of keeping the two warring Greek states in balance. In 410, Ethnic riots began in northern Egypt.
In 407 B.C. Dariush 2 made his son Cyrus the Younger Satrap of Lydia and supported Sparta against Athens. He died on April, 3, 404 and was buried in Naghsh Rostam and rests in peace by the side of his father....
